Membership Information


Membership Categories

CoVA has two membership categories: Active and Associate member.

Active membership is limited to professional archaeologists working in Virginia who meet CoVA’s qualification standards. The credentials of a candidate for active membership must be reviewed by the Membership Committee and put to vote to the full membership.
An Active member:
    • Is encouraged to attend and participate in all CoVA member meetings
    • Receives CoVA publications including the Council’s biannual newsletter, the Virginia Archaeologist, and other notifications related to Virginia archaeology and CoVA activities
    • Has voting privileges in all CoVA elections
    • Can hold offices in the organization and/or serve on committees

Associate membership is open to all with an interest in Virginia archaeology.
An Associate member:
    • Is encouraged to attend and participate in all CoVA member meetings
    • Receives CoVA publications including the Council’s biannual newsletter, the Virginia Archaeologist,  and other notifications related to Virginia archaeology and CoVA activities
    • Associates may not vote or hold office in the organization.


Annual Meetings

CoVA holds three regular meetings each year: winter, spring and fall. The secretary notifies members in writing of the date, time, place and agenda for each meeting. The fall meeting is held in conjunction with the Annual Meeting of the Archeological Society of Virginia.


Membership Qualifications

Qualifications for active membership in CoVA consist of a graduate degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field, as well as the following professional experience and expertise: a) at least one year of accumulated supervisory experience in field and analytical archaeology; b) demonstrable record of carrying research to completion; c) competence in archaeological methods and techniques; d) familiarity with relevant research issues and literature; and e) demonstrable record of professional research on archaeological resources (such as participation in cultural resource management projects or professionally sponsored research) and archaeological administration or management; or a bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field and three years of professional experience and expertise as stated above.

Applications for CoVA membership are reviewed and summarized by the Membership Committee, and then voted on by the entire membership. Associate membership is open to any individual with an interest in Virginia archaeology, particularly students and professionals in other disciplines. Associate members do not go through a voting process and can apply immediately.

Annual dues can be paid using the following methods:
